Getting Started with WhatsApp

WhatsApp is a free app that lets you send messages, make voice calls, and video chat with anyone in the world - all you need is WiFi or mobile data. It's especially popular for staying in touch with family overseas.

Why Use WhatsApp?

Completely Free

No charges for messages or calls, even to other countries. Uses your internet connection, not phone minutes.

Easy to Use

If you can send a text message, you can use WhatsApp. It works very similarly to regular texting.

Works Worldwide

Call or message family anywhere in the world as easily as calling next door.

Share Photos Easily

Send photos and videos instantly to family members or family groups.

Setting Up WhatsApp

1

Download the App

iPhone: Open App Store, search "WhatsApp", tap Get

Android: Open Play Store, search "WhatsApp", tap Install

Open WhatsApp

Tap the green WhatsApp icon (phone receiver in a speech bubble).

3

Tap "Agree and Continue" to accept the terms of service.

4

Enter Your Phone Number

Select your country and type your phone number. WhatsApp will send you a code via text message.

5

Enter the Code

Type in the 6-digit code you receive. WhatsApp may detect it automatically.

6

Create Your Profile

Add your name (this is what others will see) and optionally add a photo.

Sending a Message

  1. Open WhatsApp
  2. Tap the message icon (usually bottom right or top right)
  3. Select a contact from your list (WhatsApp shows contacts who also have WhatsApp)
  4. Type your message in the text box at the bottom
  5. Tap the send arrow (green arrow)

Understanding Message Ticks

  • One gray tick ✓ - Message sent
  • Two gray ticks ✓✓ - Message delivered to their phone
  • Two blue ticks ✓✓ - Message has been read

Making Voice and Video Calls

Voice Call

Open a chat with someone, then tap the phone icon at the top. It's just like a regular phone call, but free!

Video Call

Open a chat with someone, then tap the video camera icon at the top. You'll see each other on screen.

Make sure you're on WiFi for video calls - they use more data than voice calls.

Family Group Chats

Group chats let your whole family stay connected in one place:

Create a Family Group

  1. Tap the message icon to start a new chat
  2. Tap "New Group"
  3. Select family members to add
  4. Tap the green arrow
  5. Give your group a name (e.g., "Smith Family")
  6. Tap the checkmark to create

Now everyone in the group can see messages, share photos, and chat together!

Sending Photos

  1. Open a chat with a person or group
  2. Tap the + icon or paperclip icon
  3. Tap Photo & Video Library (or Gallery)
  4. Select the photos you want to send
  5. Tap the send arrow

You can also take a new photo right in WhatsApp! Tap the camera icon next to the message box.

Voice Messages

Don't feel like typing? Send a voice message instead:

  1. Open a chat
  2. Press and hold the microphone icon
  3. Speak your message while holding
  4. Release to send (or slide left to cancel)

This is great for longer messages or when typing is difficult.

Common Questions

Is WhatsApp really free?

Yes! WhatsApp itself is free. You only need an internet connection (WiFi or mobile data). There are no charges for messages or calls through WhatsApp.

Can I use WhatsApp on my tablet?

Yes, but you'll need a phone number to set it up initially. WhatsApp also works on computers through WhatsApp Web.

What if someone doesn't have WhatsApp?

They'll need to download it first. You can only message WhatsApp users through WhatsApp. Use regular texting for others.

Are my messages private?

Yes. WhatsApp uses "end-to-end encryption," meaning only you and the person you're messaging can read your messages.
