Group Chats with Family
Group chats are like having a family conversation where everyone can participate at once. Share news, photos, and updates with your entire family in one place - no need to send the same message to everyone individually.
What is a Group Chat?
A group chat is a conversation with multiple people. When you send a message, everyone in the group sees it. When anyone replies, everyone sees that too.
One Message, Many People
Share an update once and the whole family sees it.
Everyone Stays Connected
Siblings, cousins, and grandchildren can all be part of the conversation.
Shared Photo Albums
Everyone can share photos from family events in one place.
Plan Events Together
Coordinate holidays, birthdays, and get-togethers easily.
Creating a Group Chat
Using Your Family Group Chat
Sending Messages
Just type in the message box at the bottom and tap send. Everyone will see it.
Sending Photos
Tap the camera or attachment icon to share photos. Great for family events, grandkid photos, or what you're up to.
Reading Messages
Messages appear in order. You'll see who sent each one by their name above their message.
Replying to Specific Messages
Press and hold on a message to reply directly to it. This helps when the conversation is busy.
Managing Notifications
Group chats can get chatty! Here's how to manage notifications:

Group Chat Etiquette
Do: Share Broadly Interesting Updates
News, photos, and updates the whole group would enjoy.
Do: Respond When You Can
A quick "Looks great!" or emoji shows you're engaged.
Consider: Private Messages for Individual Matters
For things that only involve one person, message them directly instead.
Consider: Timing of Messages
Late-night messages might wake people up if they haven't muted notifications.
Do: Use Reactions
A heart or thumbs up is a quick way to acknowledge messages without adding clutter.
Troubleshooting
Someone isn't receiving messages
Make sure they're added to the group. Check that they have the same app (WhatsApp users need WhatsApp, etc.).
Too many notifications
Mute the group chat. You'll still see messages when you open the app, just won't get alerts.
Can't find the group chat
Scroll through your message list. Some apps let you "pin" important chats to keep them at the top.
Someone wants to leave the group
That's okay! In WhatsApp, open the group, scroll down, and tap "Exit Group". In text messages, leaving varies by phone.
Group Chat Basics
- Everyone sees every message - great for sharing with all
- WhatsApp groups work with any phone type
- Mute if too chatty - check when convenient
- Use reactions to acknowledge without adding messages
- Name your group clearly (e.g., "Smith Family")
