Senior Health Information
Many people who are seniors and baby boomers are living longer now than at any time in the history of the world. And many of them are much healthier as a group than at any other time as well.
But that kind of longevity also brings a few additional issues into focus.
Lots of seniors are experiencing health issues that in previous generations only a few people had to deal with. In part this is because there are more people living longer. And in part because the world has changed and the kind of health problems we are seeing now are different.
Some Seniors Fear Cancer Or Heart Disease
Nowadays, there are many more cases of cancer of almost all kinds. Part of this increase might be because we are now labeling things cancer that were not called that before, but for the most part, it seems that to some degree there have been increases in the amount of people who have cancer.
Other baby boomers experience the difficulties of heart disease. Which manifests itself in all kinds of ways. There is a large amount of cases of angina which is one of the symptoms of coronary heart disease. This is the one where they are always talking about the sticky plaque buildup in your coronary arteries.
Now this increase in case could be the result of there simply being more people alive now to have that condition or it could be due, at least in part to a change in diet and exercise habits in the boomer generation.
There are also many folks who have experienced heart attacks and bypass surgeries and occluded coronary vessels. Having stents inserted is now becoming a more common procedure with some doctors performing as many as 5 of these surgical procedures in a day. Not that this makes the procedures have any issues, its just one of those things that shows how many of these procedures are taking place.
Autoimmune Disorders Like Rheumatoid Arthritis Can Be Scary
Another major area where many cases of affliction are popping up is in autoimmune disorders.
These are the ones like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and myasthenia gravis. Other conditions which some folks think might be autoimmune disorders are fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis. Thos last two are very common in older people, and may be found in patients who have an autoimmune disorder but are not rally considered true autoimmune disorders.
True autoimmune disorders are where the body’s immune system, typically the white blood cells, attacks part of the body itself. Often the red blood cells, muscles or joints are affected. For some reason that scientist and doctors do yet understand, the body starts to lose its ability to tell the difference between healthy living parts of the body and external substances.
So the white blood cells go around the body doing their job at fighting off the invasion, except there is no invasion and the healthy living parts of the body are attacked instead. This is somewhat similar to allergic reactions, not exactly like that, but kind of the same.
For many autoimmune disorders, treatment is symptomatic, in part because it is hard to tell why the condition is happening in the first place. Not knowing that makes it kind of hard to treat.
Nothing wrong with symptomatic relief, that’s for sure. But hopefully there is enough interest in researching these extremely painful conditions so that some new treatments can be found.
